No doubt Shakespeare dipped his quill in the blackness of Iago’s heart, the most intense black he could have found to depict the world of humans, to write his tragedy. Holding true to the motto of the Globe Theatre—All the world’s a stage—Jean-François Sivadier examines that mysterious hold at the centre of Othello through the prism of acting. Is Iago, General Othello’s traitorous comrade, an implacable director who considers that reality is made up of nothing but reversible signs? Or is he the one who reveals the ambiguities of the world to a hero who believes in his role too much? Nicolas Bouchaud plays Iago, and Adama Diop plays Othello, a character whose tragic nature has come down to us through the centuries.
