In Tristesses et Arctique, Anne-Cécile Vandalem deals with political bankruptcy and climate catastrophe in modern society. In Kingdom, inspired by Clément Cogitore’s documentary film, she depicts a family retreating to the Siberian taiga to find a way of coexisting with nature before human violence catches up with them. The impossibility of the future is one of Anne-Cécile Vandalem’s central themes. This is why children always have a fundamental place in her work. They are in the foreground, radiant, and no less so than in this new gripping fiction, a family thriller that is also a parable.
