This play, which premiered in February 2022 at the Comédie de Genève, is based on interviews with members of the Red Cross International Committee and Médecins sans frontières. It weaves together stories and captures the experiences of humanitarian workers with the rich simplicity that characterises Portuguese author and director Tiago Rodrigues. On stage, a piece of cloth transforms into a tent, a hospital, a mountain… while four actors and a musician narrate the stories and evoke the violence they go through. The unbearable is felt but never shown. When words are not enough, the drums take over, as if we are approaching the unspeakable.
In French, English and Portuguese, with surtitles in English and French
Love
Love returns after its great success at the Ateliers Berthier in 2018. Set in temporary social accommodation in Great Britain, the play shows very different people brought together by the vagaries of life and forced to spend time together. Thanks to his thorough work with the actors, Alexander Zeldin makes this small, unstable and emotional community both comic and tragic. A little girl rehearses her Christmas song. A son washes his mother's hair in a sink. A family shares breakfast as if the others did not exist. Amid the tensions and despondency, love sometimes springs up as the most constant fuel of life.
Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead
In a mountainous region of Poland, Janina Doucheyko finds a neighbour dead, a small deer bone stuck through his throat. Soon after, people begin to disappear. The police investigate these as normal crimes, but Janina is convinced that animals are seeking revenge on humans. In this adaptation for the stage, Simon McBurney takes an eco-feminist detective novel by Polish author Olga Tokarczuk (winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature) and explores with humour and simplicity what connects living beings. On stage, the actor’s rhythmic teamwork complements the director’s innovative work on new technologies. After The Encounter in 2018, the Complicité company comes back to the Odéon.
